Proper bearing lubrication is essential for the reliable operation of machinery and equipment. Failure to do so can cause serious damage, resulting in significant repair costs and up to several weeks of lost production.
To ensure proper bearing lubrication, it is important to have the right information. In the following article we aim to dispel some bearing lubrication myths that can be misleading.
Myth 1: All lubricants are the same
This is not true in the least.
There are many different types of bearing lubricants. Each of these options has different advantages that can greatly affect success in certain applications and environments.
Types of bearing lubricants:
- Lubricating greases
- Oil lubricants
- Solid lubricants
- Graphite greases
- Special coatings
Another reason not to treat all lubricants the same is that some lubricants do not mix well with others. This can lead to more wear and tear on bearings. However, there are some lubricants that do mix well, such as oily and solid lubricants.
Myth 2: It is enough to re-lubricate a bearing once a year
This depends largely on the type of bearing, application environment, degree of contamination… etc.
However, there is a good chance that bearings need to be re-lubricated several times a year. Bearings subject to heavy wear may need to be re-lubricated up to weekly.
Myth 3: You can store lubricants anywhere
Not exactly.
Lubricants can easily become contaminated, so any storage area containing dirt, dust or similar materials can ruin them. It is advisable to store lubricants in a dry, cool and clean place where the containers can be rotated and used on a “FIFO” basis. So use first the first one you bought, if possible.
Use the proper lubrication for your bearings!
The optimum quantity and quality of lubricant will keep your bearings running smoothly for a long time. In fact, most places now automate this process so that maintenance tasks and costs are minimised!
