We provided the bearings and the GreenCottage DIY team created the homemade sliding gate!
The traditional sliding gate requires constant driving, which can be made difficult by uneven ground, not allowing water to run out, or having to drive the car over the lower rail.
In contrast, the “floating” sliding gate is only suspended and has no other anchorage until the closing point. We present the construction of the floating one in this article.
What should we look for when choosing the bearings for the sliding gate?
It is important that the suspension bearings are sealed on both sides. This prevents dust and other dirt from getting into the bearings causing premature failure.
Should you choose rubber or metal sealed bearings?
Both have their advantages and disadvantages.
Rubber seals are more flexible and seal tightly providing better protection against dirt and moisture. However, it can also cause friction at high speeds, which can reduce performance.
Metal seals do not seal as tightly as rubber seals. It is more suitable for high-speed applications and has a much higher heat resistance, but less protection against dirt.
Overall, we recommend rubber seals for lower speed applications where it is important to protect the bearing from dirt and moisture, such as sliding gates.
Why choose deep groove bearings for the floating gate?
Low maintenance: deep groove bearings are simple in design and durable, requiring less maintenance, especially when sealed.
Good axial and radial load handling: deep groove bearings can handle loads in both directions, allowing for versatile applications.
Reduced noise and vibration: Their operation generates neither noise nor vibration.
Easy to obtain and economical: Widely available and often cheaper than other types of bearings.
Based on the above criteria, the following bearings were recommended to the GreenCottage DIY team, who were looking for economy as well as functionality.
These bearings are available in a variety of price ranges and qualities in our store.
